We handle Sundays and public holidays during the year as follows: The nursery is not open, but everyone can come by, stroll through and be inspired. On non-official sales days, plants can also be selected in the self-service section and paid for with TWINT, cash or PayPal at the “letter box” at the nursery entrance.
Since we are often on site for plant care, we can certainly answer one or the other question for you.

What we do for a better World

Focus on “green products”

Attention is also paid to the design of the range

Even with the products that we do not produce ourselves, but are necessary for gardening, we pay attention to ecologically sensitive products, such as the decorative plant pots of the "Re-Pot" / "Eco-Pot" series, which are also made of recycled materials, or the plant strengthener Multikraft Roots, as well as the cut flower water fertilizer "Chrysal Blumenfrisch"

We are happy to help!

from 2022 our plants will grow
in recycled ports

Because only reusing is not enough

Since the nursery started cultivating the plants in pots and multi-pot plates, we have been relying on reuse. The multi-pot plates therefore do not leave the factory and are cleaned annually using a special washing device and in a disinfection bath. The disinfectant is suitable for organic farms and eliminates pests, fungi, bacteria and viruses.

We all take back the pots of the plants that are bought from us and, whenever possible, they are reused for the next crop.

The new pots consist of 100% already recycled plastic and can also be recycled with the PE seal, like other plastic packaging. Of course, we will also take them back and reuse them.

We look forward to the new pots!

Certificat Biodiversity in horticulture

What can the alternating pile, herbs and vegetables contribute to this?
What can we as a village nursery do to help?

On the one hand it is the diversity, around 160 plant species grow here, divided into almost 1000 varieties, so we find some that contribute to biodiversity.

The sometimes very long flowering period gives the insects nectar for a long time, often throughout the summer and autumn period. Many species of bees, butterflies and wasps can feed on it.

Supported by Andermatt Biocontrol, we have been working with biological pest control for over ten years.

Pest control in our nursery, in 2021 we released 3.3 million beneficial insects, including mites, parasitic wasps and lacewing larvae. With the appropriate plant protection, we were also able to offer other insects, bumblebees, various bees and wasp species hoverflies the opportunity to develop.

Plants that bees like to visit have been in our range for 25 years. This offer has been continuously adapted, expanded and optimized for our region and our climate.

Virtual tourthrough the greenhouses in Küsnacht

Here you have the chance for a virtual tour through the greenhouses in Küsnacht.
For sure, we'd appreciate it as much if you visit us in person!

From the beginning until now

The Karrer nursery was founded in 1924 by Jakob Karrer. Family members in three generations grew vegetables, which were delivered to a sales center in Zurich. A small part of the fresh vegetables were also sold directly at the nursery.

From 1978 to 1988 the two brothers Ernst and Walter Karrer also traded in vegetables. The self-produced vegetables and purchased fruits were delivered to hospitals, restaurants, canteens and various shops in the area. At that time, the nursery also had a vegetable shop for direct sales.

Since 1989, more potted plants and interchangeable florets have been grown in addition to the vegetables, initially in a small scale, that grew larger from year to year.

Today, the nursery Karrer is managed by Fredi and Evelyn Biedermann-Karrer. A well-trained team of gardeners helps to maintain a wide range of plants - around 160 different types of plants are currently being produced.
